SnS Style Update: Ankle Boots

It’s well and truly boot weather around these parts.

Is it boot weather in your neck of the woods?

I’ve been wearing boots most days this last week. Cold mornings have meant covered feet are a must. At night, boots are now the warm, comfortable option.

I pack my boots away over summer (although last year, it was November due to a very cold Spring), so in the last few weeks I’ve been happily re-acquainting myself with boots from seasons past.

Last year, I had bought a couple of pairs of heeled ankle boots including a pair from Seed (below) which are dressy but high. A very similar pair is in store at Seed this season which you can see here.

Last winter, I also bought a pair of grey heeled ankle boots from Boden. (I am wearing them in the photo below). You can this season’s update here. They are a more casual boot with their nod to cowboy style and have a tan block heel.

I’m a fan of the heeled ankle boot because I love the way heeled ankle boots elongate my legs. That said, I confess I can’t wear them anywhere which requires serious walking. Instead, they are a go to shoe in my evening shoe reportoire.

One gap in my boot wardrobe, which I recently filled, was a pair of flat ankle boots. I bought the Taylah ankle boots in black (below) from Country Road to wear with dresses, jeans and skirts for every day wear. I’ve already worn them loads and have been surprised at how comfortable they’ve been and how the little block heel has provided some welcome foot support. I can also happily report that there were no breaking in issues.

Here are my picks of what’s on offer and some tips for choosing the right shoe for you.

When buying ankle boots, there are a few things worth considering:

1. Heel vs Flat Some people wear heeled boots for every day wear. If you do, look for a style that is easy to get on and off, try to find a heel height that is comfortable for you and consider waterproofing them (if suitable).

As I do a lot of walking during the day, I tend to stick to flat boots for day and I bring out my heeled boots for nights out. Therefore, my heeled boots are reasonably high as I am walking much shorter distances.

2. Think Beyond Black There are more options than ever when it comes to colour and footwear. Ankle boots are no exception. Think outside the usual black box – grey, sand and navy boots are great alternatives to black and can be just as versatile.

3. Dressy or Casual I tend to stick to black heeled ankle boots or knee length heeled tan boots for nights out and flat coloured boots for day time. This really goes to personal preference and lifestyle, but it is worth thinking about what gap in your wardrobe you are trying to fill and this will in turn, provide some guidance about what you really need and how much it is worth spending.

Above, the gusset (7) style and cowboy styles (5) and (6) are more of a casual option perhaps while slick, heeled black ankle boots with hardware (1) and (9) are dressier options. If you like to wear heeled ankle boots by day, (4) is a great all round option.
