What to Wear in September

Wo to the Hoo.

Is anyone else excited that Spring has sprung?

Yes?

I’m hearing you.

BIG TIME.

It’s definitely Excitement Central around these parts.

Spring is such a great time of year on so many levels, particularly here in Melbourne where there is a festive air everywhere with AFL finals (some are happy to see their team play; others are happy the season is nearly over!), the Royal Melbourne Show (well, the kids are pumped), school holidays and of course, the Spring Racing Festival.

There’s also a festive feeling of sorts in the fashion department.

Sure, we may still need our scarves and trench coats for a while, but there’s plenty of new fashion elements to play with. And in this month’s What to Wear post, I’m featuring some of my favourite Spring fashion trends that you can wear right now, wherever you live – bold colour, lighter neutrals, prints, metallic and textural details.

So over to our first outfit, a smart casual outfit which could happily take you from work to Friday night drinks or lunch with the girls.

What to Wear in September - Work

ABOVE: 1. Duster Jacket, $199.95 from Witchery; 2. Lazy Day Silk and Modal Dress, $139 from Marcs; 3. Geometric Studs, $29.95 from Birdsnest;  4. Alder Heels, $199.95 from Birdsnest; 5. Baby Chicago Camel bag by Louen Hide, $99.95 from The Iconic.

How lovely is this simple but sophisticated t-shirt dress? With it’s silk fabrication, it’s dressy enough for work or dinner out while the tie waist and t-shirt sleeves keep things relaxed.

As for the colour, this striking green suits so many, particularly those with blue or green eyes, and works back just as well with black or metallic shoes and accessories as it does with this light tan.

I’ve introduced some print into this outfit with these simple but striking studs but to increase the glam factor, substitute for your favourite bling slash statement earrings.

This drapey duster jacket from Witchery adds another layer for crisp Spring mornings and evenings without being too formal or structured.

This second outfit, below, is my idea of a fun weekend or casual outfit which is high on comfort and practicality.

What to Wear in September - Casual

ABOVE: 1. Easy Stripe Tee, $39.95 from Seed Heritage;  2.TOMS sunglasses, $140.00 from The Iconic; 3. Pastel Floral Scarf, $29.95 from Portmans; 4. Superga Trainers, $89.95 from The Iconic; 5. Cropped Distressed Skinny Jeans, $139 from Bohemian Traders; 6. Caspar Bag, $69.95 from The Iconic.

I never say no to a stripe and in my book, a breton tee is a great wardrobe staple all year round. I’m loving this fresh Spring version with the yellow which looks particularly fab worked back with distressed denim and white trainers.

I love a crop jean at the best of times (and you might too if you’re also in the long torso short legs brigade), and I’m a big fan of the new BT version. If you’re wondering about the fit of these new season BT jeans and how they compare to other BT styles, check out this post by Nikki over at Styling You.

I’ve added this gorgeous pom pom scarf (I never met a pom pom I didn’t like) for some extra colour and texture. With so many colours in it, this scarf is a great addition to a wardrobe full of neutrals and block colour too.

I’m also loving these TOMS sunnies which are a playful take on the usual tortoiseshell.

The final element is this gold messenger bag which is practical but pretty. If you like to have your hands free for kid wrangling or holding shopping bags (who me?), it’s hard to go past a messenger bag. I like how they distribute the weight of my bag evenly too. This bag, being gold, can easily transition to evening or dressier outfits too.

If you’re looking for a casual dress alternative to the top and tee situation above, check out this well priced Tencel Chambray Shirt Dress, $49 from Target.

Lastly, with party and wedding season kicking off, I’ve put together a dressier outfit.

What to Wear in September - Party

ABOVE: 1. Fireworks Earrings, $58 from Each to Own at Etsy;  2. Kimono Reversible Tunic Dress by Sacha Drake, $249 from Birdsnest; 3. Metallic Zip Purse, $69 from Gorman; 4. Leisa heels, $149.95 from The Iconic; 5. Sephora Collection Lipstick in Love Test, $17 from Sephora.

I bought these fab Each to Own earrings a while ago from Obus and I’m surprised by how much I’ve worn them already. With plenty of colours and gold to work with, I’ve worn them with with navy, black, denim and hot pink already.

I’ve been really impressed with the new  Sacha Drake range at Birdsnest too. While this LBD is definitely an investment, a quality LBD that you can wear from work to cocktails and beyond is likely to be good value over time or on a price per wear calculation.

The fact that it’s reversible too (boatneck one side; V neck on the other) gives it that extra versatility too. Finally, the elbow length sleeve and tie waist create a flattering shape.

If you’re already sorted in the LBD department, you might be looking to update your outfit with some new season accessories or a new lippy.

This geometric pouch from Gorman (which also comes in a metallic wine/pink and wine/teal colourways), adds a modern touch while this bold pink lipstick is gorgeous against the black and gold.

Finally, a simple heel is always a wardrobe winner too for work or play, and I’m loving these mid heels by Nine West.
