If you’ve browsed in store or IRL lately, you’ll have noticed that most fashion retailers are full of neutrals.
Racks and racks of blacks, greys, whites, navy and camel dominate entire stores.
There are variations within that of course with various cuts, embellishments and textural details creating interest and points of difference.
I’m certainly a big fan of All the Neutrals and like most self respecting Melburnians, I’ve been wearing a lot of black this winter. That said, there are days when I feel the need to perk myself up and stop myself from blending in to the grey old day.
A bright pop of colour not only works back nicely with all my winter neutrals but brightens my day and makes me feel good.
Above, I’m wearing Julia Patch Pocket skirt from Boden, which I picked up on sale recently (sorry – it’s now sold out) together with some old Boden favourites (knit and coat) and my Silent D Wiana Black lace ups from Style Tread.
The beauty of a bright colour pop, like the one I’m wearing above, is that it doesn’t even require any styling – it will work back with anything. Most bold colours – such as orange, acid yellow, pink, cobalt blue and all the greens from mint and aqua through to emerald – contrast beautifully with blacks, greys, white and navy.
So it’s simply a matter of finding one thing you like and adding it to your neutral outfit.
So where to find colour this winter?
I’ve found that some stores like Boden (a UK brand with an Australian website which has just launched it’s Autumn range therefore has plenty of stock and carries sizes 6 through to 20), Marcs, Obus, Portmans and Sussan can be consistently relied upon to serve up some great colour along with their neutral offerings. They are my first port of call when I’m looking for a colour fix. (I would usually include Gorman in this field too but they’ve had a much darker look this autumn/winter).
Having looked through some of my favourite colour loving retailers, below I’ve curated a selection of fun pops of colour, beginning with pink.
ABOVE: 1. Glitter studs, $25 from Martha Jean; 2. Wool cable stockings, $45 from Obus; 3. Multi Coloured Splice Scarf, $39.95 from Sussan; 4. Cashmere Feel Round Neck Jumper, $12 from Target; 5.Richmond Trousers in Hydrangea, $118 from Boden; 6. Wave Mid Court Shoe, $168 from Boden; 7. Lolita Textured Leather Shopper, $229 from Marcs; 8. Seedbed Short Sock, $9 from Obus.
From tights (2) to socks (8) to an amazing pair of trousers (5) , a pop of pink can only be a good thing. It works back with everything but I especially love my pinks with tan tones and rich navy.
Through winter, from fashion to home wares, we saw plenty of blush pink paired with grey and rose gold. This is a beautiful combo but if you’re looking for a warmer weather fashion variation, just replace the grey for distressed denim or white as we head towards spring.
Darker and bolder tones of pink are coming through for spring with pretty candy and hydrangea pinks. I adore these shades and am hoping this is a preview of what’s to come.
But if rich jewel tones are more your thing, it’s hard to go past a pop of cobalt blue, turquoise or emerald green.
ABOVE: 1. Flash Earrings, $49 from Gorman; 2. Abstract Bouquet Print Scarf, $29.95 from Portmans; 3. Nicole Fendel Earrings, $69 from Birdsnest; 4. Travel Tips Nail Polish, $9 from Obus; 5. Short Stuff Crop Sleeve Jumper, $139 from Marcs; 6. Sally Coat, $248 from Boden; 7. Button Through Midi Skirt, $88.50 from Boden; 8. Patti Flat Point, $118 from Boden; 9. Sleeveless sheath dress, $49 from Target; 10. Monte Carlo Pants, $129 from Obus.
These beautiful colours are classically stylish and will always be the perfect foil with blacks and greys during winter.
A pretty knit like (5) above is perfect under a suit for a corporate work place or paired with denim on the weekends.
Smaller but no less impactful, statement jewellery, such as (1) and (3) above, nail polish (4) or scarves (2) are an easy way to introduce colour too.
This beautiful boiled wool coat from Boden (6) can be dressed up or down and comes in four other colours, including neutrals and a pretty rose pink.
If you love emerald, you’ll be crushing hard (like I am) over these stunning suede pointed flats (8). You should also check out this Sofia Silk Shirt, $179 from Marcs.
Finally, if you love a pop of orange or acid yellow, I’ve got you covered below …
ABOVE: 1. Finch Cap Sleeve Dress by That Bird Label, $119 from Birdsnest; 2. Long Sleeved Breton, $54.40 from Boden; 3. Alchemy Scarf, $99.95 from Mimco; 4. Dimple Bangle, $26 from Elk Accessories; 5. Derbys in Antique Coral by Rollie, $159.95 from Style Tread; 6. Hydrangea Drop Earrings, $49.95 from Emily Green; 7. Cindy Silk and Modal tee, $99 from Marcs; 8. Carolyn Ponte Dress in Saffron, $164 from Boden; 9. Scoop Neck Tee, $19.95 from French Connection; 10. Ingrid Sandals, $118 from Boden.
Of the citrus shades, I tend to gravitate most to orange but I’m also partial to a pop of acid yellow. It’s not the most flattering colour on me though, so I tend to wear it away from my face, as I’ve done in the photo above.
All of these zesty citrus shades work back beautifully with darker neutrals and denim too. A little goes a long way.
I’m loving these earrings by Emily Green (6) and this dimpled bangle from Elk Accessories (4) which is on sale – there are some great bargains to be had in the Elk sale if you haven’t already scoped it out.
Striped bretons (2), silk tops (7) and a basic block colour tee (9) are an easy way to build colour in to your wardrobe too.
If you have a holiday coming up somewhere warm or live in warmer climes, this pretty Birdsnest dress, (1) is a great option too.
